Donut Duathlon Race Report

The flat, fast and exciting Duathlon was the first ever staged at the Torbay VeloPark. On Saturday 25th April, fifty competitors crossed the start line for the first ever ‘Donut’ Duathlon- 5km run, 15km bike ride on the VeloPark, finishing with a final run of 2.5km. The super fast, off-road event makes the most of our fantastic Velopark facility in Torbay, as the energetic field of competitors discovered, coming from as far a field as Liverpool, B...ristol and North Wales!

First male across the line, in an impressive time of 54:53, was Scott Watkins from Totnes, with first female, Karen Watkins (Teignmouth), coming home in 1:03.27. Local triathlon club, Torbay Tri had a healthy representation in the top 10 for men and women all in their NEW club trisuits. While the two GeoPark Adventure training team bloggers both gave a great account of themselves in their first GeoPark Adventure race of 2015 (Laura Wakeham- 2nd Female 1:05:58 & Jo Coish- 16th Female 1:24:23).

Every new race organised hopes to give its competitors a challenging but totally enjoyable experience. GeoPark Adventure can rest assured of the ‘Donuts’ future success, as the competitors were full of praise for the facilities, organisation and smiley marshals. Winning female Watkins said ‘Going round the track was one of my favourite cycling experiences. Loved it. Thanks for a great event, and delicious donuts!’. This was a sentiment shared by Samantha Froggett (20th Female 1:32:05), who commented ‘Thank you for a lovely introduction to duathlon and triathlon events, I thoroughly enjoyed myself as a first timer today…great organisation and good marshaling by all involved. Thank you’.

Extra spectators came to the Duathlon ‘eyeing up’ the course for the English Riviera Velopark Triathlon on 24th May. The same bike and run route is being used for this triathlon, which will also have a swim in the Torbay Leisure Centre pool. Over seventy-five children are already signed up for this Junior and senior triathlon, which also serves as the trials for the Torbay Triathlon team for the Devon Youth Games in July. Entry for the junior races starts at 8 years old and the eldest signed up for the senior event so far is 69!

Information for school team entry will be sent to schools this week so keep your eyes peeled!
